Take the bus to the ballpark

Spring is here, and in Detroit that means one thing: baseball season! The 2006 American League Champion Detroit Tigers kicked off their home opener on April 2. After last year's amazing run, 2007 will be an exciting year. We may even see the return of last year’s sold-out Tiger Trains.

Don’t let traffic and parking hassles ruin your fun. Take the bus to the ballpark!

Most downtown-bound DDOT and SMART busses stop near Comerica Park in Foxtown. Or hop off the bus downtown and take the People Mover to Grand Circus Park. Most busses on the major corridors such as Woodward, Gratiot, Michigan Avenue, Jefferson, Grand River and Fort continue running into the late night so if a game goes into extra innings or is followed by fireworks, you can still get your ride home. Parking costs and post-game traffic have increased, so take the bus and save $20 for more ball park franks.

Most regularly scheduled games start at 1 or 7pm. Nationally televised games start at 3:25 or 8pm. The following major corridor routes tend to run more frequently downtown. Remember that weekend service tends to be less frequent, so check with DDOT and SMART for current times and schedules.  Here are some of the routes you can use:

The Tigers went from underdogs to leading the league, and transit can do the same. While other cities are building new systems, Detroit has struck out without swinging.   Time for a Detroit transit home run!

Another option - Take your own Tiger Train

Amtrak departs Pontiac at 11am and 4:30pm, stopping in Birmingham and Royal Oak on it's way to Detroit's New Center. Ride the #53 bus down Woodward to the ballpark and back. Return trains leave New Center at 7:45pm and 12:30am. Check with Amtrak for current schedules and train status.
