TRU Organizer / Assistant Director job description
We are seeking a passionate motivated people-person to join our staff as the Organizer / Assistant Director, leading public engagement and organizing efforts. As the second person on staff, the position provides high levels of responsibility, flexibility and opportunities for growth.
Position responsibilities
- Lead community outreach and organizing to build and demonstrate broad support for public transit among diverse populations throughout southeast Michigan
- Lead and coordinate outreach events including festival tabling, community presentations, business outreach, and much more
- Update and enhance our website, Facebook pages, and other online presence
- Build and strengthen volunteer involvement with recruitment, training, relationship building, and leadership development
- Coordinate and work closely with current leaders and other volunteers to enhance their effectiveness
- Recruit, coordinate, and train additional volunteers and student interns
- Build a strong team of active, involved transit supporters
- Increase membership support and other fundraising
- Assist with (and eventually lead) membership drives, including renewal letters, special events, online fundraising, and other member recruitment and fundraising ideas
- Develop strong relationships with new and existing major donors and expand their involvement and financial support
- Assist with grant writing and other fundraising
- Assist with important administrative tasks including meeting logistics and data management
Primary skills / abilities required
- Volunteer management and leadership development experience
- Excellent verbal communication skills, including public speaking before large audiences and one-on-one mentoring/facilitation
- Ability to successfully manage multiple projects and responsibilities with consistent follow-through
- Quick and thorough learning of complex information
- Independent and self-motivated, also able to work in teams
- Comfortable and effective working with diverse people and in diverse settings
Additional abilities / experience desired (but not required)
- Knowledge of the greater Detroit area, urban and metropolitan issues, political advocacy, transportation policy, and public transit
- Fundraising, donor development, and grantwriting experience
- Web savvy, including website management, Facebook, email advocacy, and blogs
Salary / benefits
- Salary range of $25,000-35,000, depending on experience
- Health insurance and bus pass provided
