A Desire Named Streetcar

the past, present, & future of Detroit transit

A PROGRESSIVE EXHIBIT ABOUT PUBLIC TRANSIT IN GREATER DETROIT

Fifty years ago this April 8, the last Detroit streetcar took its final trip along Woodward Avenue.

Join TRU in celebrating what was once the nation's largest municipally-owned streetcar system, with historic maps, pictures and memorabilia. Exhibits will also look at the region's modest present system and consider our potential future with a world-class regional transit system and the economic and social benefits it will bring.

Exhibits of the past, present and future of Detroit transit will be on display in four People Mover stations Saturday, April 8 from 12 noon until 4pm for just the cost of a $.50 People Mover token. Board at the Financial District or Ren Cen stations.

On Friday, April 7, support TRU and preview the exhibit with a progressive party, including at guided preview tour on the People Mover of the exhibits, with presentations, prizes and appetizers, followed by an afterglow reception with wine and beer in the historic and beautiful Guardian Building promenade. The event begins at 5:30pm on Friday, April 7 in the Guardian Building promenade - 500 Griswold, at the corner of Congress, in downtown Detroit.
