Sierra Club Green Cruise! Saturday, August 11, 2007 at 12:45pm Woodward Avenue in Ferndale, at Nine Mile

A fun event promoting non-motorized mobility!

THE 3rd ANNUAL GREEN CRUISE
Saturday, August 11, 2007

What is the Green Cruise?
Sierra Club organizes the Green Cruise to celebrate alternative forms of transportation that do not burn fossil fuels by celebrating the people that use these alternatives - walkers, canoers, bikers, runners, rollerbladers, hikers, swimmers, etc.

Walker-friendly places are people-friendly places. Putting walkers needs first results in a more attractive, liveable environment for everyone - where people not only walk but also linger, meet, interact, and play. More people out and about on foot makes everyone feel safer and discourages crime and anti-social behavior.

Meet on the west side of Nine Mile and Woodward at 12:45pm (in front of the Old Navy). The parade begins promptly at 1 p.m.

To receive regular Green Cruise updates, send your email address, city, and phone number to
melissa.damaschke@sierraclub.org.

Lots of details at http://www.sierraclub.org/community/oakland/green_cruise.asp.

The project is a transit-oriented development (TOD) which concentrates multiple uses near rail and bus transit with local and regional connections. CITYSCAPE DETROIT PRESENTS MEGAN OWENS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF
TRANSPORTATION RIDERS UNITED (TRU), ON TRANSIT- ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT

Megan Owens, the Executive Director of TRU, will speak about Detroit’s mass transit development plans. TRU’s expert understanding of transportation issues and transit-oriented development help guide neighborhood and City development .

The presentation is Monday, April 7th, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. The presentation will be held at the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit (CAID) at 5141 Rosa Parks Blvd., Detroit, MI 48208 (on Rosa Parks Blvd. just north of Warren Ave). This presentation is the third of a four-part series that Cityscape is hosting about areas that border the
Woodbridge Neighborhood. Considering the economic downturn of today’s economy and the national
housing slump, banks and investors are looking towards urban environments as vehicles for growth.
The integration of transportation options and mobility in urban centers is perhaps one of the most
important and marketable attributes being offered in cities worldwide. The public is encouraged to
come, get involved, see how communication and discussion can bring investment into the city, and
witness how vibrant neighborhoods are created.
Cityscape Detroit the oldest nonprofit group in Detroit devoted to urban planning, urban design,
preservation, architecture, investment, green spaces, pedestrianism/human scale development, urbanism,
and the "built environment.” More information is available at www.cityscapedetroit.org. The group has
been involved in planning and development issues; organized educational lectures, discussions and
tours; marketed the city, its architecture and history; attracted investment; and been making Detroit a
better place to live for almost three decades.

TRU Spring Action Meeting – Thursday, April 2

On THURSDAY, APRIL 2nd, lead organizer Josh Hyman will be leading TRU's first SPRING ACTION MEETING!

Light rail is coming to Detroit - but only if sufficient funding is developed.  Bus usage is soaring - but the bus services may have to cut service or raise fares because of the economy.

At this volunteer kickoff, we will be talking about the exciting projects TRU has on deck for this year - legislative, media, community organizing, and more - and how YOU can get involved!

There is NO BETTER TIME THAN NOW to make the difference!  Meet us at the Guardian Building, lower mezzanine, on Thursday, April 2, and become a part of this incredible movement.

TRU fall meeting - long range transportation funding Monday, September 21, 2009 at 6:30pm Northwest Activity Center - 18100 Meyers in Detroit
Recent bus funding troubles have made it crystal clear that greater Detroit will never have the quality transit system we need without more funding and a dedicated funding source!

So this fall's member meeting is going to focus on the issue of long-term funding for transit and transportation:
 - SEMCOG Transportation Director Carmine Palombo will present their proposed transportation plan for the next 25 years and the funding troubles transportation will be facing;
 - TRU staff will discuss efforts to raise state transportation funding and local funding options;
 - And we'll all discuss ways to ensure that public transit raises the money we need for a high quality regional transit system for Detroit's future!

If you care about public transit, you won't want to miss this important event!

Note - due to Guardian Building construction, our meeting will be at a new location!  The NW Activity Center is in northwest Detroit, at the corner of Meyers and Curtis, between 6 and 7 Mile Roads and between the Lodge and Wyoming.  The Dexter bus (#16) goes right there and several others buses travel nearby.  There is also a fenced parking lot behind the building.

WJR Radio 760 AM: Transit and Michigan's Prosperity Agenda Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at 7:00pm WJR Radio 760 AM

From the Detroit Free Press:

http://freep.com/article/20100224/BLOG2505/100224010/Transit-helps-drives-Michigans-prosperity-agenda

Dan Gilmartin, CEO of the Michigan Municipal League, will look at why transit matters to Michigan’s and Detroit’s future in the next part of "Michigan Prosperity Agenda" on WJR-AM (760) at 7 p.m. today.

I [Free Press Editorial Writer Jeff Gerritt] acted as cohost for the show, which includes Oakland County developer Alan Kiriluk, University of Michigan instructor Peter Allen and Don Stypula, executive director of the Grand Valley Metropolitan Council. During a taping last week, I was struck by the support Kiriluk, a successful businessperson, had for transit that would shape more sustainable development patterns in the region. He even said he would consider supporting a regional tax to pay for the system. It’s worth noting that business groups like the Detroit Regional Chamber have long supported transit, understanding its importance to economic development.

  • Allow discussion as to why public transit is good for your business and what actions you and your business can participate in to promote it.
  • Have an open question and comment session.
  • Cover the next steps regarding how we all can help make regional public transit a reality.
A light breakfast will be provided and there is no cost to you except your time and input.

Blueprint America screening and discussion Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at 6:00pm Wayne State University Law School Auditorium, 471 West Palmer, Detroit
Beyond the Motor City is a PBS documentary directed by acclaimed filmmaker Aaron Woolf (King Corn) and produced as part of BLUEPRINT AMERICA that shines a spotlight on one of our country’s most critical issues: America’s decaying and neglected infrastructure.

Beyond the Motor City examines how Detroit, a grim symbol of America’s diminishing status in the world, may come to represent the future of transportation and progress in this country. The film explores Detroit’s historic investments in infrastructure—from early 19th-century canals to the urban freeways that gave The Motor City its name and made America’s transportation system the envy of the world. But it also reveals that over the last 30 years, much of the world has left Detroit—and America—behind, choosing faster, cleaner, more modern transportation.

Join us at the Wayne State University Law School Auditorium for a partial screening and discussion of Beyond the Motor City, with Director Aaron Woolf and local transit leaders.

Reception and Networking at 6:00 pm
Screening (highlights) at 6:30 pm
Panel Discussion at 7:00 pm
Q&A and Call-to-Action at 7:30 pm

Presented by Transportation Riders United, Let's Save Michigan, and Wayne State University.
