The Minneapolis / St. Paul region, with a similar population
density and far worse winters than Detroit, has been very
successful with its new 12-mile light rail transit line.
Forty percent of Hiawatha riders are new to transit and would
otherwise drive.
In 2005, its first year of full operation, Hiawatha LRT attracted
7.8 million riders, exceeding pre-construction estimates by 58% by
October, ridership had surpassed projections for the year 2020.
During construction of the new line, property values in the corridor
rose 22% faster than the city as a whole.
