Regional Transit in the Jaws of Defeat!

Despite overwhelming need for regional transit improvement, and despite pleas from the region’s community and business leaders, Oakland and Macomb leaders today (July 28) blocked regional transit.

When the RTA board voted to place transit funding on the November ballot, 5 members voted for it – all the board members from Wayne, Washtenaw and Detroit. But all 4 from Oakland and Macomb voted against it. Since the law that created the RTA required an affirmative vote from each county, that vote failed.

Not all hope is lost, however. If the County Executives can work out a deal in the next two weeks, the RTA could bring it back up for another vote, but they must do so before August 16 to get it on the ballot.

Otherwise, we’re likely stuck for another 4 years before we have another chance to vote on true regional transit.

We need your help to keep up the pressure!

RTA Delay Risks Transit Funding!

The RTA was scheduled to vote Thursday July 21 to adopt the Regional Transit Master Plan and place the funding on the November 8 ballot. Unfortunately, objections from Oakland and Macomb board members have delayed that vote.

Delay is risky because if the RTA does not vote by August 15 with an affirmative vote from every county, funding cannot be placed on the November ballot and the region would have to wait at least two more years.

RTA staff are working diligently to address their concerns. The board is tentatively scheduled to meet again July 28.

The Regional Transit Master Plan is here!!

The Regional Transit Authority of Southeast Michigan (RTA) has developed a proposed Regional Transit Master Plan for how to improve and expand transit throughout the four county region.

It’s a great plan that would make huge strides in addressing our region’s transit needs, including connecting people to jobs, providing easy airport access, and ensure seniors can maintain independence.

The RTA Board is scheduled to vote July 21 on the plan and the ballot language to allow voters to decide to fund it. Please help spread the word about this plan and its benefits throughout our region.
