Vote Yes on Wayne Countywide; TRU endorses Wayne Co. Transit for All

On August 4th, Wayne County voters will get to vote on expanding SMART service to cover the entire county. We encourage you to vote YES on the Wayne County Public Transit Millage.

What is the Millage?

Map of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties, showcasing SMART public transit and DDOT routes.

The Millage will extend SMART service into all suburban and rural areas of Wayne County that currently do not have SMART transit service. Bus service in Detroit will also be enhanced, and Detroiters and inner ring suburb residents will gain new connections. For suburban communities with SMART service, this is purely a renewal that will have no tax increase. For Detroit and suburbs without SMART service, this will cost about $8/month for the average household. If your suburban town already has SMART service, then this a yes vote is only a renewal and you will see no new taxes.

New services that could be implemented with a Yes vote include a Southwest Wayne dial-a-ride, unified para-transit covering the entire tri-county region, and over 10 new and extended routes into most communities. A yes vote means ever community gets some level of public transit. Learn more from SMART.

Why should I vote yes?

  • 350,000 people in Wayne County have few or no options to get around if they’re unable to drive.
  • Tens of thousands of people cannot drive, whether due to age, disability, law, or cost.
  • Current local transportation services for seniors and people with disabilities severely limit where and when they can get around.
  • Many employers struggle to hire and keep workers, despite people being willing to work.

Transit supports seniors, people with disabilities, students, workers, and low-income families. And even if you don’t ride transit, you rely on someone who does. A yes vote means letting everyone in our county get around, regardless of whether they drive.
