The Detroit Free Press, WDET, MLive and others have recently reported about the final major decision-making on the Woodward Light Rail project. Some of this coverage has made people worry.
Just to reassure, nothing significant has changed on Woodward Light Rail. DDOT, FTA, and City administration officials are still carefully reviewing all the public comments on the DEIS. They are carefully weighing the options, including in-street alignment, downtown route, and stop locations. They are developing a final proposal that will serve the best needs of the community – including transit, economic development, safety and convenience for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists.
Based on careful research, TRU strongly supports having the train run in its own lane in the center of Woodward. This is the national best practice for transit speed, reliability, and safety. For details on why, download TRU’s report on Woodward alignment.
Because these are big decisions with lots of factors and input from lots of people, the timeline looks to be pushed back a month or two. While any delay is frustrating, it is vital that this first rapid transit project be done right. We knew this timeline was aggressive. Stay tuned over the next month or so for more information.
