SMART Board approved massive cuts!

Last week, the SMART Board of Directors voted to approve nearly all of their proposed cuts, massively gutting critical bus service. 

With the exception of maintaining route 160 Downriver, all of the other cuts will go into effect December 12:

  • Eliminate 14 routes entirely,call-to-action megaphone
  • Slash most service within Detroit,  
  • Eliminate several Connector Services, and
  • Fire 123 employees!! 


It’s true that SMART has major budget troubles from shrinking tax revenue, but SMART really rushed through these cuts, disregarding the more than 300 people who spoke out in strong opposition at their public hearings.  They should have carefully trimmed service with a scalpel, not chopped off huge swaths of service with a hatchet!  These cuts will cause serious harm that could have been minimized.
