We need more and better bus service and real rapid transit. Every other big city has learned that effective regional transit requires an effective Regional Transit Authority (RTA). Right now, Michigan’s legislature is debating creating an RTA for southeast Michigan. SB 909, HB 5309 and their companion bills would establish a RTA for Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne Counties, including Detroit, to coordinate, fund, improve, and expand public transit.
But the legislators can’t agree and it’s at risk of not passing. Senator Morris Hood (Dem – Detroit/Dearborn) is currently opposed to the bills, concerned about the union protections and Detroit’s votes on the Board.
Help fight for more and better transit!
Senator Morris Hood is the key swing vote on the Transportation Committee.
