This morning the Detroit City Council voted down the budget amendment proposed by Mayor Bing.
It would have restored the full $4.4 million that the People Mover needs to keep operating and plus $4.7 million of the $7.8 million for DDOT bus service. Councilmembers James Tate and JoAnn Watson voted to support it, highlighting the need to fund transit and other city services. All other councilmembers voted against it, citing distrust that the revenue the Mayor is counting on is really there and disliking other items in the overall budget amendment.
Council President Pugh and other council members repeatedly tell them media and constituents that they support public transit and that bus service is important. Yet they vote against two alternatives for funding transit and fail to propose other alternatives.
If no compromise is reached soon, the People Mover will close, bus riders will be left stranded, Woodward Light Rail will be threatened, and Detroit transit may be devastated for years to come!
Call City Council once again today and tell them
Express your outrage to the seven council members who voted down the budget amendment and ask, if they support transit as much as they say, why they haven’t proposed their own budget amendment to fully fund transit!?!
