Mayor Bing talks transit

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing brought up Woodward Light Rail in several recent interviews.  MLive quoted an interview on WDET:

Bing identified several developments he said point toward a brighter future, including the Woodward Avenue Light Rail Project.  With funding in place and a federally-required environmental impact study underway, construction on the 9.3-mile light rail line is expected to begin late next year. "It’s something different, it’s something new, it’s something that should have probably happened 40 years ago," Bing said, noting Detroit has been forced to play catchup with its urban counterparts after years of falling behind.

Bing expects the line will facilitate continuing development along the Woodward Corridor and compliment recent developments in Midtown. . . .  "So I’m very bold on that area. And I think that’s what’s going to start to bring our city back."

"That’s just the beginning," he said.  "If we’re talking about regional transportation, you’ve got to have a connecting system.  It’s not going to happen overnight, but it’s a start. Woodward Avenue is considered the spine of Detroit, so getting a light rail system up and down it will be the beginning of a coordinated system."
