TRU seeks a passionate self-starter to research, analyze, and advocate for more equitable transit access throughout Michigan and more balanced state transportation investment priorities. Everyone should be able to get where they need to go, regardless of whether they drive. Yet Michigan has no clear measurement or map of where people have meaningful transportation alternatives – and you can’t fix what you don’t measure. Michigan also fails to prioritize the transportation investments needed to expand and improve those options.
This Fellow will work in three main areas:
First, the fellow will identify available data sources and propose definitions of levels of service to effectively map out what parts of the state have public transit services and at what levels of service, with particular focus on rural residents, low-income Michiganders and persons with disabilities.
Second, they’ll analyze Michigan’s transportation investments in addressing transit gaps by evaluating how MDOT decides how to invest the $8+ billion it spends on Michigan transportation every year. They’ll study national best practices and identify and advocate for innovative ways to prioritize that funding to best address gaps in mobility.
Throughout the process, the fellow will engage with diverse Michiganders from throughout the state and who represent a range of societal sectors to ground-truth the data and proposals based on real lived experiences, to ensure it represents and benefits the breadth of Michiganders.
