Michigan legislative leaders want to steal $15-20 million from transit!

This morning, Rep. Dave Agema offered a budget recommendation to the House Appropriations Subcommittee he chairs that would cut $20 million from bus operation funds. He wants to give $10 million of that to state highways and $10 million to local roads.   This would be devastating to public transit agencies in metro Detroit and throughout the state!

The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee recommends to take $10 million from bus purchasing and $5 million from bus operations, with all of that funding to be transferred into the General Fund to help address the deficit there.

Please contact your legislators and let them know how devastating this would be for public transit and our community!

You may also want to contact a few other key legislators:

  • Senator John Pappageorge, Troy, Chair of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation – 517-373-2533
  • Rep. Ken Goike, Macomb County (critical of SMART linehaul services, but LOVES the paratransit service in his neighborhoods) – 517-373-0820 [email protected]
  • Rep. Nancy Jenkins, Lenawee County – 517-373-1706 [email protected]

We know that Rep. Brandon Dillon, the lead Democrat on the subcommittee, will offer amendments to try and stop this raid on the operating line item. We’re doubtful that any one of the Republicans will support Dillon, but it is still important that we make the effort. These legislators need to realize how damaging Rep. Agema’s recommendations will be in communities throughout Michigan.
