Transit agencies across the country are in trouble: deep
ening fiscal crises are forcing them to cut back on vital services, lay off key workers, and hike fares in the midst of a recession, threatening the public’s ability to get to work, school, or the doctor. Meanwhile, public transportation ridership is at record highs – it’s been growing at triple the rate of the US population! Now is not the time to cut services and raise fares.
The problem goes beyond any single agency. Our new transit funding crisis map shows a sampling of the hundreds of agencies across the country in dire budgetary straits. It’s a nationwide crisis, and it requires national action.
