The Woodward Avenue Action Association (WA3) has commissioned a transit task force of elected officials, key employers, and institutional partners from Berkley, Birmingham, Ferndale, Huntington Woods, and Royal Oak to develop a unified transit vision for South Oakland Woodward communities and to partner with regional, state, and federal authorities on major initiatives like expanding the Woodward Light Rail Transit Project from 8 Mile to Maple Road.
Chaired by Jana Ecker, Director of Planning for the City of Birmingham, the transit task force includes:
- Kate Baker, Mayor Pro Tem, City of Ferndale;
- Steve Baker, Councilmember, City of Berkley;
- Jim Ellison, Mayor, City of Royal Oak;
- Jeff Jenks, Commissioner, City of Huntington Woods;
- Richard Murphy, Transportation Programs Coordinator, Michigan Suburbs Alliance;
- Mark Nickita, Mayor Pro Tem, City of Birmingham;
- Melanie Piana, Councilmember, City of Ferndale; and
- Cristina Sheppard- Decius, Executive Director, Ferndale DDA.
Initial goals for the WA3 transit task force include developing a regional view of existing conditions, defining corridor transportation patterns, needs, and goals, and reaching broad support for a shared transit vision. This collaborative effort will proactively consider the opportunities for – and the benefits of – expanding safe, efficient, and cost-effective rapid transit into the Oakland County segment of the Woodward corridor.
