Volunteer or Intern with TRU

Ready to get involved in the fight for great transit? Volunteer with TRU!

Our TRU Volunteer Team meets virtually every month to discuss top transit news, TRU campaigns, and to plan ways each person can take meaningful action to improve and expand transit.

TRU board members meeting virtually during 2020.

Involvement opportunities may include contacting legislators, surveying bus stops, helping uplift voices on social media, interviewing bus riders, helping at TRU events and more.

Interested? Fill out this form, or Email Za’Nyia ([email protected]) to get meeting schedules and other ways you can get involved!

We also have dedicated volunteer teams for Wayne countywide transit in 2026, and statewide transit issues! To join either of those committees, mention it in your email to Za’Nyia, or email Joel for Wayne county ([email protected]) or Petra for statewide ([email protected]).

TRU is seeking smart, enthusiastic students and others to get involved!

Positions vary depending on current projects and priorities, but may include the following:

  • Social Media Video Intern
    • Millions of internet users need to know about Detroit transit and we need your know-how to make that happen! Improve TRU’s website and utilize Instagram, Twitter/X, Facebook, YouTube, and other social media to share compelling videos, interesting stories, powerful facts, and meaningful action opportunities to better educate and engage people in improving Detroit area transit.
  • Community Outreach Intern
    • The success of transit improvement efforts depend on an educated and supportive community. Build transit understanding and support throughout southeast Michigan by helping arrange and manage community engagement events and TRU outreach at community festivals.
  • Transit Voices Story Intern
    • A picture is worth a thousand words, and a video, many times more so. Improve support for transit by telling the personal stories of transit riders and supporters through videos, pictures, and more.
  • Policy Intern
    • Reports and research inform TRU’s recommendations and policies that we push for across the region and state. Help research on new transit policy positions, and help us make the case to leaders for greater transit.

Both in-person and remote positions are available. To apply, send a resume to [email protected] with a cover letter explaining why you are interested and what you can bring to the position.

As a grassroots advocacy organization, our goals are big but our budget is small. Most interns receive modest pay, as well as free bus passes. We are happy to work with any college or university to enable our interns to get course credit, if the intern arranges it with their school.
