Testimony Before Detroit City Council

TRU’s Assistant Director Ruth Johnson presented an update on Detroit transit before the Detroit City Council. We presented an honest evaluation of DDOT progress under Mayor Duggan and Director Dan Dirks, rating their results to date a “C-.”

On the plus side, the mayor has made transit a priority and Dan Dirks is working hard to undo decades of underfunding and mismanagement. Yet riders are not yet feeling on-the-ground improvement.

A Significant Win on Transit Funding!

The Michigan legislature passed a major package of bills to fund transportation and more, including $112 million for transit!

However, for the funding to be enacted, Michigan voters must decide in May 2015 to raise Michigan’s sales tax to 7% from its current 6%.

Thank you so much if you were one of the thousands of people who called, emailed, and visited your legislators to urge their support for transit!!

RTA CAC Recommends Changes in Woodward Rapid Transit

Southeast Michigan has a recommended plan for how to build rapid transit on the full 27 mile length of Woodward Avenue! If built, this Bus-Rapid Transit would provide frequent, attractive service to many major destinations along this essential corridor.

Although much of the proposed Woodward BRT follows best-practices of running in dedicated lanes, as currently proposed, the BRT would move off Woodward through midtown Detroit and potentially sharing traffic lanes on Cass and John R instead.

The RTA’s Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) recommends “a Mainline / All-Woodward alignment between Grand Boulevard and Grand Circus Park, running in a dedicated facility.”
